Best Eye Hospital for Cataract Surgery in Delhi

Cataract is the clouding of the lens of your eye that impairs vision. Cataract is responsible for more than half of the blindness in the world, which is a grim fact, because it is a treatable condition. According to WHO statistics, in India there are more than 12 million blind eyes of which 80% blind are due to cataract which is a preventable disease. Advancing age is the top most cause for cataract.

How does eye function?

The eye functions much like a camera. Light rays enter the eye passing through cornea and reach the pupil. The pupil similar to the aperture in the camera adjusts the amount of light that reaches lens, which bends the light rays to focus objects onto the retina lining the back of the eye. From there, the image passes through the retinal cells, into the optic nerve, and finally to the back of the brain which process the images.
Cataract occurs when there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing some loss of vision.

What Causes Cataract

Age is a primary reason for cataract. About half the population by the age of 60 has cataract while around 80 per cent people have cataract in at least one eye by the age of 70 years. With age protein of the lens turns opaque. In the initial stage the lens bends light rays irregularly, which requires prescription glasses of higher number to correct it.

Metabolic disorders like diabetes and hypothyroidism predisposes the patient to cataract. Excessive exposure to sunlight too is believed to cause cataract. Similarly air pollution too is believed to be responsible for cataract. Lifestyle concerns like heavy alcohol consumption and smoking too contribute to the development of cataract. Injury to eye can also lead to clouding of the lens of the eye.

What are the Symptoms of Cataract

Cataract can make simple day to day living difficult. The symptoms are :

  • Progressive nearsightedness in older people
  • Problems driving at night such as glare from oncoming headlights
  • Problems with glare during the day
  • Double vision (like a superimposed image)
  • Sudden changes in glasses prescription

How Cataract is Treated

When cataract forms, surgery is the only way to treat it. In cataract surgery the surgeon removes the clouded lens and puts an Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) in your eyes. Your vision will be as good as pre-cataract days, though you may need to wear glasses. Over the years, cataract surgery has moved from vision restorative to refractive surgery, so that you have reduced need of glasses.

Surgical Techniques

Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery a leap ahead of the traditional cataract surgery in delhi. It has converted cataract surgery, a manual multi-step, multi-tool procedure to one with laser created, surgeon controlled precision.

Femto Advantage

  • 100 per cent blade free
  • Safer surgery. Surgical process takes less than 1 minute. Femtosecond laser allows computerized programming of corneal incisions. The precisely structured incisions are self-sealing that minimize the risk of post-operative infections.
  • Enhanced visual outcome resulting from consistent circular laser-created capsulorrhexis The first step in cataract surgery is creating a capsular opening around the cataract (capsulorrhexis). Studies have also shown that laser capsulotomies enable better centering of the intraocular lens (IOL), and IOL positioning is a significant factor in determining final visual outcomes.
  • Improved surgical process. The use of femtosecond laser for fragmentation of the cataract in smaller, softer pieces allows for the removal of cataract through reduced phaco time and power. This is especially useful in complicated cases and compromised corneas. Quicker post procedure recovery

Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS)

  • Over the years the size of corneal incision made during cataract surgery has considerably reduced for improved visual outcome, quicker post procedure recovery for the patient.
  • Requires a very small incision of about 2 mm
  • Cataract is emulsified into small pieces by an ultrasonic probe and a foldable IOL is implanted.
  • Stitch less, bloodless, painless surgery

When to go for Cataract Surgery?

The time when cataract begins to disrupt your lifestyle, get it removed. Do not wait for the cataract to mature, as it leads to more difficult surgery and impairs your vision.

Can a cataract grow back?

No.Blurred vision after months or years of cataract surgery results from clouding of the thin capsular bag membrane that helps keep the lens implant in place. To restore clear vision surgeons use a laser to open a visual path through the cloudy membraneThis can be easily removed by laser treatment as a simple outdoor procedure.

When one can plan for the other eye cataract surgery?

Usually both eye surgeries are not done together. If the recovery of first eye is good, the second eye can be operated even on the next day of first eye. It is as per the comfort of the patient and the doctor.

What is the life of the IOLs?

Once the IOL is implanted in your eye, it is the part of your body for whole life. Even children with congenital cataract are implanted the similar type of IOL.

New generation IOLs

  • Aspheric IOL
  • Toric IOL
  • Multifocal IOL
  • Toric Multifocal IOL
  • Accomodative IOL
