It is also known as corneal grafting and is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by the donated corneal tissue (the graft) in its entirety (penetrating keratoplasty) or in part (lamellar keratoplasty). The graft has been removed from a recently deceased individual with no known diseases or other factors that may affect the viability of the donated tissue or the health of the recipient.
Corneal topographic analysis:
At Spectra Eye, we offer the latest corneal imaging modalities: the Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging system and the Orbscan slit scanning technology to map and diagnose even the earliest cases of keratoconus.
Corneal collagen crosslinking:
Corneal collagen crosslinking, CXL or C3R is a relatively new form of therapy for keratoconus patients. It involves treating the cornea with high concentrations of vitamin B (Riboflavin). This is followed by exposure to UV light. The treatment induces cross linkage of corneal collagen fibers at the molecular level. This treatment is aimed at arresting the further progression of keratoconus by strengthening the corneal architecture. It also aids in better contact lens fitting in these patients and reduces the need for major surgeries like corneal transplantation.
We at Spectra Eye have been pioneers in introducing this treatment and have treated many such patients so far.
Intra corneal Ring Segments (KeraRings)
Semi soft gas permeable lenses are the mainstay of treatment for eyes with keratoconus. This is because such eyes have large cylindrical errors which cannot be corrected with glasses. These will be required even after C3R treatment (because C3R only helps to prevent the further progression of keratoconus). However, in patients who have advanced keratoconus, the considerable cylindrical error does not allow even a contact lens fitting. Also, these lenses can cause irritation and sometimes infection and redness in eyes.
To reduce these large cylindrical errors seen in keratoconus, there is a new therapy available; Intacs or KeraRings are specially designed plastic ring segments, which when implanted in the cornea, significantly reduce the cylindrical error and improve the quality of vision.
At Spectra Eye, we have pioneered this treatment in North India. Also as a further improvement in this therapy, we use state of the art technology (Intralase laser technology) to make the procedure almost pain free and very safe for the patient. The Intralase femtosecond laser creates a precise tunnel for the corneal ring segments to be implanted. This makes the procedure simpler and safer and produces more satisfactory results for the patient.
Collagen crosslinking may be used in conjunction with INTACS or toric phakic IOLs. This combination approach not only seeks to halt the progression of keratoconus but also provides a tremendous improvement in the quality of vision of the keratoconus patient.
Advanced cases of keratoconus may require corneal transplantation. Spectra Eye is an authorized corneal transplantation centre and boasts of a team of experienced corneal specialists trained from apex institutes across India and the world.
